Kyiv as a Ukrainian capital is a natural railway cross-point. What's more, it's located in the northcentral Ukraine and the railway tracks to the capital city are in a good condition - that is why if moving from Western to Eastern Ukraine (or opposite) you will probably go through it. There are trains to Berlin, Wroclaw, Krakow, Warsaw, Prague, Viena, Budapest, Bucharest, Varna, Belgrad, Sofia, Venice and to several places in former USSR. It's a great point to get out of the plane and start a train-trip through Ukraine and to get acquainted with a unique soviet railway system. To buy a ticket from Kyiv you should personally go to the train station here with your passport (and passports of everyone travelling with you!), stand in a queue which can last looong and even then you can eventually hear that there are no tickets for your train. Ukrainian railways are the cheapest in Europe but it results in such disadvantages as e.g. running out of tickets long before the day of departure.
